Head Start and Sure Start Programs

Teacher with preschool classroom

There's good news if you need help getting your child ready to start school. The Head Start Program teaches reading, math and other developmental skills to your 5-year-old or younger child before starting school. If you are stationed overseas, Sure Start is open to command-sponsored military children who meet specific age requirements and other criteria.

Head Start is a great way to get your child ready to start school. It's a national program that promotes school readiness by enhancing your child's social and cognitive development through education, health, nutritional, social and other services. Early Head Start was established to serve children from birth to 3 years old. Both programs involve parents in their children's learning, helping them make progress toward their children's education, literacy and employment goals.
