PCS: Preparing for Your Next Adventure

Frequent moves are a part of military life, and for many of us they are a big reason we joined the service. The upsides of PCS moves include:

  • Seeing new places, both in and outside of the U.S.
  • Experiencing other cultures, customs and foods
  • Making new friends, both on base and in the local community
  • Taking on new duties and growing professionally
  • Gaining a deeper understanding of the world and its people

As with most parts of your military career, information and preparation are the keys to planning a move that goes smoothly — letting you make the most of your new experience. Military OneSource offers two tools to help you master your move.

Plan My Move

Plan My Move is an online tool that simplifies the moving process, breaking it down into clear, manageable steps for both experienced and first-time movers.

Use the tool’s planning calendar to organize your move. Select your departure date, departure location and your destination to customize the calendar to meet your specific needs:

  • Add, modify and remove tasks.
  • List key departure and arrival activities.
  • Access general and installation-specific information.
  • Modify the timeframe for your move, ranging from one month to two years.
  • Use the handy to-do lists and checklists.
  • Request a sponsor, a service member at your new location who can answer questions and show you the ropes.
  • Learn about benefits and allowances and create a relocation budget planner.

MilitaryINSTALLATIONS

Through MilitaryINSTALLATIONS, you can learn about your new duty station and the area you’ll be moving to. Just select your location and find information on topics such as housing, relocation assistance, child care, household goods, education and health care. You can:

  • Read articles about your installation.
  • View photos, weather information and maps.
  • Download and print installation booklets.
  • Research community information and cost-of-living comparisons.
  • View a state resource directory and all installations in a state.
  • Use the searchable directory of installation and state programs and services to find phone numbers, email addresses and websites.
