Legislation

Military programs are governed by federal law, Department of Defense policy and additional policies specific to the branches of service. The below are the excerpts from federal law that govern sexual assault in the military.

Public Law 108-375, Section 577, "The Ronald W. Reagan National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2005," October 28, 2004 This law directs DoD to develop a comprehensive policy on the prevention of and response to sexual assaults involving members of the armed forces and provides guidance on a timetable for policy implementation.

Civilian Rape Reporting Laws This summary of states' reporting laws on sexual offenses is available through the DoD Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office website. Please note that for the most current information, state laws are the best primary resource.

Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) This link references the most recent updates to the UCMJ relating to rape, sexual assault, and other sexual offenses.
