OurRelationship

Benefit overview

OurRelationship is a flexible, interactive program for military couples. It allows service members and their partners to work through relationship challenges together. They do this through evidence-based online activities, with or without a coach.

How this benefit helps

Participants can complete these activities on their own schedules, using a phone, computer or tablet. They can have brief, weekly calls with a program coach scheduled when it works for them — even when deployed or long distance. They also have the option to guide themselves through the program without the help of a coach.

OurRelationship is tailored for active-duty, National Guard and reserve couples. It is part of a full range of relationship support services offered through DOD’s Military OneSource program.

This program is free to active-duty, Guard, and reserve couples up to 365 days after separation or retirement.

  • Communication and conflict
  • Emotional distance and love
  • Trust

Learn more by reviewing these FAQs.

Couples who choose the OurRelationship coaching option are more likely to complete the program. Their online activities are reinforced with phone or video calls with a coach. This option:

  • Includes five weekly 20-minute calls with a coach who helps you tailor the online program and activities to meet your needs.
  • Can be completed on your schedule, days, evenings or weekends.
  • Allows participants to select their coach. They can learn about the coaches by browsing the OurRelationship website. Some coaches have a military background.

Couples who choose the self-guided option complete the online activities without outside support. The self-guided option:

  • Is good for highly motivated couples.
  • Can be done at a couple’s own pace.
  • Encourages structured conversations and includes tasks to complete outside of the reading material and video content.
  • Includes feedback tailored to the couple’s responses.

Both the self-guided and coaching options take four to six weeks to complete. The program requires a lot of reading and access to technology, including internet.

The OurRelationship program is most helpful for couples who:

  • Are highly motivated and want to improve their relationship on their own.
  • Have only a few areas in their relationship they would like to improve.
  • Want to give their relationship a boost in a shorter time frame.
  • Want a little additional support without the full commitment of working with a relationship therapist or counselor.
  • May not feel comfortable with another person helping them strengthen their relationship.
  • Need the flexibility of completing the program either separate from each other or outside of standard business hours due to temporary duty assignments, deployments and other realities of military life.
