ARTICLEEligibility for Military OneSource
5 minute read • Nov. 8, 2024Military families experiencing challenges, such as frequent moves and deployments, are eligible to receive confidential non-medical counseling, specialty consultations, and other forms of free confidential help from the Defense Department. This support is available in person, via secure video, over the phone, and online for service members, immediate family members, and, in some cases, DOD civilians.
As a leader, service provider or anyone concerned with the health and welfare of military families, you know that having reliable, current information about military programs and resources is critical to providing the support they need. Military OneSource provides a wide range of support and confidential services, including:
- Military OneSource online services and webinars
- Call center consultation and referral services
- Language translation services for documents and for telephonic interpretation
- Non-medical counseling available in person, by telephone, via secure chat or by secure video session
- Tax consultation and filing services
- Health and wellness coaching
- Financial counseling
- Child and youth behavioral military and family life counseling

Eligibility for all Military OneSource services
The following groups are eligible for all Military OneSource services listed above:
- Active duty service members of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Space Force.
- Active-duty immediate family members, including spouses, children and anyone who has legal responsibility for the service member’s children during separation for the child’s benefit.
- National Guard and reserve service members regardless of their activation status.
- Immediate family of National Guard and reserve service members, including spouses, children and anyone who has legal responsibility for the service member’s children during separation for the child’s benefit.
- Coast Guard members who are activated as part of the Department of the Navy under Title 10 authority, as well as their family members.
- Survivors (surviving spouses who have not remarried and children) of active-duty, National Guard and reserve service members (regardless of activation status or cause of service member’s death).
- Medically discharged service members and their immediate family members currently enrolled in their service branch’s wounded warrior or seriously ill and injured program.
- Immediate family, caregivers and parents of wounded warrior or seriously ill or injured service members, including spouses, children and anyone who has legal responsibility for a service member’s children during separation, for the benefit of the children.
- Retired service members and their immediate family members until 365 days past end of tour of service, retirement date or discharge date.
- Discharged service members (if discharged honorably) and their immediate family members until 365 days past end of tour of service, retirement date or discharge date.
- Designated Department of Defense expeditionary civilians, as defined by Directive-type Memorandum (DTM)-17-004, “Department of Defense Expeditionary Civilian Workforce” during the 90 days prior to deployment and 180 days post-deployment.
- Immediate family of designated Department of Defense expeditionary civilians, including spouses, children and anyone who has legal responsibility for workforce member’s children, for the benefit of the children.
- Military academy cadets, students enrolled in one of the service academies for the Army, Navy or Air Force.
- Active-duty foreign military service members assigned to U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Space Force installations who are registered in DEERS. Foreign military service members who have DOD-issued CAC with MWR/commissary/exchange privileges.
- Immediate family members of foreign military active-duty service members registered in DEERS. This includes spouse as defined by 10 USC Section 101 and children.
Eligibility for limited Military OneSource services
The following are eligible for Military OneSource online services and webinars, and call center consultation and services:
- Parents and extended family members when needing assistance with issues that are directly related to or on behalf of their service member. This includes persons authorized to conduct business on behalf of the service member.
- Reserve Officers’ Training Corps students enrolled in an accredited ROTC program.
- Delayed-entry recruits and future recruits who have entered into a non-binding, but promissory contract with the military. Those under 18 are required to have parental consent for selected services.
- Parents and immediate family members of delayed-entry recruits and future recruits when needing assistance with issues that are directly related to or on behalf of their future recruit. This includes anyone who has legal responsibility for a future recruit’s children.
The following are eligible for language translation services for documents and for telephone translation as well as the limited Military OneSource services listed above:
- The parent of or other person who has legal responsibility for an eligible child, for the benefit of the child, if the service member is being served under one of the services’ wounded warrior or seriously ill or injured programs.
