Single Life

Overview

Life as a single service member can be exciting and full of adventure. There may also be times when things don’t go as well as you’d like. Wherever military life takes you, there are programs and support services to help you over any bumps and to make the good times even better.

Read about valuable resources that can help you travel across America or abroad, transition home from a deployment, survive the breakup of a relationship and more.

Check out the MWR Program

Your installation’s MWR program offers everything you need to have fun, meet people and enjoy your favorite activities. At military installations around the world, you’ll find a lot to do, including swimming pools, bowling facilities, libraries, golf courses, recreation centers, trails, movie theaters, and more. Additionally, take advantage of fitness classes, travel perks, learning opportunities, sports teams, outdoor recreation programs and equipment and even auto skills centers to take care of your vehicles.

Plan an off-base adventure

Off-base adventures start with your installation’s Information, Tickets and Travel office and the outdoor recreation office. They’ll give you the scoop on sporting events, museums, theme parks, aquariums, zoos, historical sites and other attractions, both far and near. They’re also good for discount tickets and vacation planning services.

If you’re planning a trip, check out the Best Kept Secrets locator to find campgrounds and facilities across the United States. American Forces Travel is your place for booking discounted airfare, cruises, hotels and more.

See America for free

Don’t pass up the opportunity to hike a stretch of the more than 84 million acres of national parks or just gaze at the beauty of our natural resources. Access your free America the Beautiful pass that covers entrance fees at national parks and national wildlife refuges, in addition to standard amenity fees (day use fees) at national forests and grasslands, and at lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Single service member programs

Check out your service branch’s single service member program for recreational opportunities and much more.

  • Army BOSS Program — The Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program focuses on enhancing the quality of life and morale of active-duty single Army service members, but activities are also open to members of all services, National Guardsmen and reservists, Defense Department civilians and foreign service members.
  • Navy Liberty Program — Find recreational opportunities for single service members in the Navy, ranging from day trips in your local area to group outings to sporting events. Additionally, your local Liberty Center offers movies, video games and recreational usage of computers and Wi-Fi so sailors can stay connected with their friends around the world. For more information, visit Military OneSource’s Installation Directory of MWR programs.
  • Single Marine Program — Find quality of life, recreation and community involvement activities for single Marines. Each major Marine Corps installation has an established Single Marine program council that meets regularly to plan and coordinate activities.
