Family Advocacy Program Frequently Asked Questions

Deciding if, when or how to report domestic abuse is not easy. But support is available. There are two ways to make a report of domestic abuse in the military: restricted and unrestricted. To learn more about reporting options, whether you are experiencing abuse or know someone who is, connect with a nearby advocate.

Choosing to report domestic abuse can be difficult. But knowing what to expect can help. In the military, there are two reporting options: restricted and unrestricted. This video is about restricted reporting. For those seeking to address their situation privately, a restricted report could be an option.

Unrestricted reporting offers victims safety planning, clinical counseling and medical care, and notifies a service member’s command and the appropriate law enforcement organizations of the incident for a potential investigation. An alleged abuser will also be provided with services when there is an unrestricted report.

When an unrestricted report is made about an incident that has occurred on a military installation, military law enforcement may investigate and contact the alleged abuser.

Command becomes involved and can offer resources for protection, which may include a military protection order. Similar services are available when an incident occurs off a military installation. Full access to services is also provided, including help from a victim advocate, medical care and counseling.

The best time to reach out for help is before abuse happens. When harmful patterns emerge in interactions with a partner, contact the Family Advocacy Program for support. This video can help you better understand your options.

  • Control over online accounts
  • Use of mobile devices to track a person’s whereabouts

Here is some guidance to help keep you and your pet safe.

Transitional compensation is a temporary resource that provides financial support and other help to dependent victims of abuse.
